Globally, atheists and agnostics are estimated to make up just 7% of the world's population (Keysar and Navarro-Rivera 2017. The term “atheist” describes a person who does not believe that God or a divine being exists.
Recent statistics in UK is alarming according to which, One in four members of the public stated: “I do not believe in God,” compared with one in 10 in 1998.
Witnessing to someone who believes that God doesn’t exist (an atheist) can be challenging. A person who doesn’t believe in God will not believe in such things as the resurrection, the Bible (as God’s Word), the deity of Jesus, or any number of other essential Christian doctrines. Reasoning about the Christian faith is difficult when a person rejects the Divine Being who is the foundation of the Christian faith.
Some Practical Tips
1. If they ask for proof of God’s existence - You can tell them about creation and the natural wonders that science has not been able to explain.
Issac Newton (1642-1727) wrote “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets & the comets could only proceed from the counsel & dominion of an intelligent & powerful Being.”
If you really study science, it will bring you closer to God.” - James Tour, Nanoscientist
The fine-tuning of the Universe
There are fundamental constants and quantities that determine the structure of the Universe, for example, the speed of light, the gravitational constant, etc. Scientists have come to the realisation that each of these numbers have been carefully dialled to an astonishingly precise value - a value that falls within an exceedingly narrow, life-permitting range. If any one of these numbers were altered by even a hair's breadth, no physical, interactive life of any kind could exist anywhere. There'd be no stars, no life, no planets, no chemistry.
Gravity
If the gravitational force were altered by 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000001 percent, our sun would not exist, and, therefore neither would we. Talk about precision.
Speed of Light
Any of the laws of physics can be described as a function of the velocity of light (now defined to be 299,792,458 meters per second). Even a slight variation in the speed of light would alter the other constants and preclude the possibility of life on earth.
Oxygen Level: On earth the oxygen level is 21% and makes life possible if it was 25% fires would erupt spontaneously. If it was at 15% we would suffocate.
DNA
As you may know, a computer program is made up of ones and zeros, like this: 110010101011000. The way they are arranged tell the computer program what to do. The DNA code in each of our cells is very similar. It's made up of four chemicals that scientists abbreviate as A, T, G, and C. These are arranged in the human cell like this: CGTGTGACTCGCTCCTGAT and so on. There are three billion of these letters in every human cell!! Well, just like you can program your phone to beep for specific reasons, DNA instructs the cell. DNA is a three-billion-lettered program telling the cell to act in a certain way. It is a full instruction manual.
“If you can’t see God, how can you believe in Him?” There are a lot of things we believe in that we cannot see. (Gravity, Air, Love)
Encourage Atheist to take a moment alone in his room and tell God in his own words that “though he has not believed in his existence, he wants to know if he really exists.”
Pray: GOD, IF YOU ARE REAL, HELP ME TO BELIEVE.
2) Morality: Every law has a law-giver -
If we believe there is a moral law, it seems logical that there is a moral law-giver. Even the most remote tribes that have been cut off from the rest of civilisation observe a moral code. Every civilisation promotes behaviour believed to be good and acceptable, while deeming other behaviours as evil or worthy of punishment. Where then do we get the idea of right and wrong? Perhaps this moral law (or conscience) comes from an ultimate law-giver above humanity. If we believe there is some sort of moral law, then we can assume that there is a law-giver.
3) If they say evil & sufferings in this world disprove God - This is an important question we need to wrestle with. Thankfully, the Bible is not silent on this issue.
Evil does not exist on it's own.
An evil requires Good and Good requires God - C.S. Lewis
Ask questions - But how one got this idea of just and unjust?
But how one got this idea of Immoral & Moral?
But how one got this idea of Wrong & Right?
A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line.
